The Milon K. Banerjee Centre for Arbitration Law is named in honour of the late Mr. Milon K. Banerji, an eminent jurist who served as the Attorney General for India for two terms, between 1992 to 1996 and 2004 to 2009.
The Centre shall have Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman [Retd.] as the Chair, and Mr. Ritin Rai, Senior Advocate as the Co-Chair; with Mr. Gourab Banerji, Senior Advocate as the donor and patron. NALSAR alumni, Dr. Amit George, Advocate [class of 2009], shall be the Director [Research], and Ms. Shreya Parikh, Advocate [class of 2011] and Ms. Chand Chopra, Advocate [class of 2012] shall be Associate Directors [Research].
The Milon K. Banerji Centre for Arbitration Law is conceptualized as a research, training and teaching centre which would serve as a hub for students, legal scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to converge, exchange ideas, educate and contribute to the evolution of arbitration practices. By focusing on state-of-the-art methodologies and staying abreast of global trends, the Centre endeavours to play a pivotal role in shaping the future landscape of arbitration in India by inter-alia intending to do the following:
- To undertake high-quality research in the field of arbitration, and its interface with other areas of law.
- To develop concept notes, whitepapers, and undertake similar activities to encourage a culture of research in arbitration law.
- To conduct seminars, conferences, lectures, and short-term training programmes by distinguished and accomplished arbitration practitioners on the latest issues and developments in contemporary arbitration jurisprudence, for academics, the wider policy community and students.
- To strengthen undergraduate and post-graduate education programmes in arbitration law and to promote it as a preferred dispute resolution mechanism.
- To undertake and publish an annual analysis of the development of arbitration jurisprudence in the country.
- To develop an online repository of research resources, including articles, case studies, and legislative updates, to serve as a comprehensive hub for scholars, practitioners, and students interested in advancing their knowledge in arbitration law.
- To establish an annual lecture series focusing on the way forward for the arbitration ecosystem.
